Karla Designs Artisan Made Leather Bags and Clothing to Go Wherever Life Takes You
What’s your story?
I am of Mexican descent and, since 2004, have lived and worked abroad in many different parts of the world, such as the USA, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
As a young girl, I dreamt about having my own business. My parents were my inspiration as I come from an entrepreneurial family. When I moved to Hong Kong, I started my own business called, Mika Rouge where I design multifunctional leather bags. At this time, I also became a mother. While my girls were still babies, the inspiration for a clothing brand came to me when I saw a photo of my sister, in Mexico, wearing a beautiful top that was fully handcrafted by Mexican artisans. I saw an opportunity to bring unique Mexican style clothing to Asia and to promote the work of Mexican artisans, so I added a new brand, RougeMEX852, to my existing business.
As of March 2016, we officially split the brands, and now RougeMEX852 is a separate brand. The split was very well received by our clients and we are excited to observe how people love the brand, and in particular, appreciate the handcrafted work that goes into making each individual and unique piece.
Totes In Style: Our Favourite Functional And Fashionable Diaper Bags
Karla Prompers, Hong Kong mama to triplets, created a line of bags to support all of your lifestyle needs like carrying a laptop, going travelling and, of course, carting around everything your baby might need and more!
The sleek look of the Luna makes it a great option for a backpack-style diaper bag. Its minimalist design makes it super lightweight even with its multiple pockets and the water-resistant interior makes it safe to carry around bottles without worrying about ruining the bag. If it works for a full-time working mum of triplets, you really can’t go wrong!
Artisan-made fashion, home decor celebrates Mexican, Cambodian heritage of two entrepreneurs
Karla Prompers-Marin and her (almost) three-year-old triplets are the perfect adverts for the Mexican clothing and accessories range from her brand, Mika Rouge.
“I’m from the north of Mexico, from an entrepreneurial family, so I’ve always wanted my own business,” says Prompers-Marin as she settles on the couch of her flat on The Peak – Hong Kong’s most upscale neighbourhood – her girls Sophie, Amelie and Juliette, all wearing colourful dresses from the Mika Rouge Mex range, jumping energetically around her.
Hong Kong has been her home for the past seven-and-a-half years, but Prompers-Marin has lived and worked around the world – in Boston, London, and Dubai – with jobs in fields from human resources to recruitment and logistics. As a confessed lover of shoes and bags, fashion was always on her radar.

Triple the happiness
It’s a first here at Sassy Mama HQ… our next That Mama is Karla Prompers, creator and founder of Mika Rouge, a luxury leather bag line (that also doubles as a diaper bag!) and mama to triplet girls, Juliette, Sophie and Amelie! We’re in total awe at how this first time mama balances time with her triplets while running her own business. Karla shares with us her initial reaction to the news of her pregnancy, the best advice anyone has ever given her as well as her top organisational tips (and you can bet we’re taking notes!). Although life may be hectic (as we can all imagine!), there is definitely a lot of love that fuels this busy family as they navigate family life in the 852.
